Day 2- Palmyra

SO after we went to Sharon and before we went to Woodstock we stopped and got some
Maple Syrup at the Turnbridge store. (too bad TSA spilled it so we couldn't take it home)
A store in the town where Joseph Smith Sr and Lucy Mack met, courted, and were married.

Pretty much the best dinner I had the whole trip

grilled romaine lettuce, yummy chicken, etc... Yes i would go back just for that.

Below are pictures from the Joseph Smith Sr farm house

Joseph had to hide the plates under the hearth once

Big kitchen

Below is a box where Joseph had to hide the plates.
He was always one step ahead of the angry mobs.
funny what happens when you listen to the spirit

These are some of the bedrooms from the cabin.

this is an old picture of what the Smith farmhouse was when I visited in 1996

this is the same but in color.... so imagine my surprise when i saw what it looked like now.
This is what it looks like now.

ya slightly different than what i remember.
smaller.
It may be more true to what it looked like back in the 1820's though.

The size of the Joseph Smith Sr Cabin- it isn't the original one.
It is the original foundation though
It gives you the idea of what it would have been like
when Moroni appeared to Joseph in the night. He was sharing a room with 5 other brothers

below is the barn

lets be honest.... they have a rockin visitors center!

picture of Christ among the Nephites - see 3 nephi

Mormon and Moroni- the compiler (librarian) and the depositor of the plates.
great father/son duo

churches of Palmyra

original paintings from the blue BOM missionaries give out.

by the time we had got all this done .... Jake was Tired.
But it wasn't time to sleep yet.
We still had 2 Sessions to do at the temple.

the first session we did John and Sarah VanAllen.
It's cool because they are the oldest VanAllen family on record
in the United states.
And here we are- a relatively young VanAllen family doing their work for them
in the temple that would have been the closest to their home.
It would have been Stellar to be able to find their graves!!! maybe next time.
Sarah - we don't even know her maiden name or
her parents names so we couldn't get her sealed to them.
John is the oldest male VanAllen traceable (so far) and he was actually
born in Vermont around the year 1700.

Alvin started the Smith's farm house (white) but he died

On 19 November 1823, at age 25, Alvin died of an overdose of calomel which was administered to cure a case of "bilious colic." Alvin believed his brother Joseph's claim that he was to recover an ancient record from a nearby hill. His death occurred two months after Joseph’s first visit to the hill from which he was to have recovered the golden plates that would later be the source for the Book of Mormon. According to a history written by his mother, Lucy Mack Smith, as Alvin lay dying he called each member of his family to his bedside to give them counsel. To his brother Hyrum, Alvin said, "I have done all I could to make our dear parents comfortable. I want you to go on and finish the house." He urged his younger brother Joseph to fulfill all of the requirements to obtain the record . Alvin's death had a significant effect on the family, resulting in Joseph taking more of a leadership role.
